Arial view of South Mumbai

This is the arial view of South Mumbai. Thanks to a friend of mine Satish Vijaykumar, who we all call Satya, sent me this pic which throws a lot of light on what the whole locale looks like from the skies. The best thing is the sea all around.

Here you will see that the sky line is not exactly only high rises. There are spots which seem to look like hutments. Those are the areas which the Brits had not realy wanted to look aesthetic.

The area on the extreme top is the NAVY NAGAR portion. This place is like a cantonment, there is a very old church in this area called AFGHAN CHURCH and there is the intellectual domain of the people into phyisics called T I F R ( Tata Institute of Fundamental Research).

A little below that is the not so very clean section called the AMBEDKAR NAGAR, MUKTI NAGAR & GANESH NAGAR slums. But the only good thing about some of these slums is that people residing in the sky scrappers get some house maids and the men of these slums are often into some odd jobs repairing things etc so they come handy.

The spot where there is a blue arrow is called CUFFE PARADE. This area is reclaimed some many years ago. Here you can see 2 buildings one tall and one a little shorter are our own WTC.

The area opposite Cuffe Parade is COLABA. This is a very big area. according to one mobile network it has A- L may be more towers. COLABA starts from the famous SHYAMAPRASAD MUKHERJEE CHOWK ( Prince of Walles Museum) all the way to Afghan Church. Colaba has the headquarters of the BEST buses. This building is called PARIVAHAN BHAVAN. Then Colaba has the most famous heritage site the GATEWAY OF INDIA and opposite to that is another famous landmark THE TAJ MAHAL HOTEL. Colaba has this 2 kms walk with shops on either side and small guest houses and this very big Parsee Colony Cusrow baug. This walk is called COLABA CAUSWAY.

After Colaba there is the business area called FOUNTAIN and FORT. Fountain is where the Zero mark on the milages start. Distances are measured from here. One can say it is banks which have their main branch here, well most of them do. There is the BSE here and there is the RBI also. There is the MINT also. The end of the Fort area is the other famous landmark of Mumbai The CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI TERMINUS ( V T ).

Then on the right of the screen you see a pink arrow, that is the newer business area called NARIMAN POINT. This area is mosty high rises 20 floors and more. Most finance offices are here. You can see this small cream coloured dom like structure this is the VIDHAN SABHA . This is where the descisions regarding the state are taken. It is the Political place. Here there is another famous hotel THE OBEROIS now after it was sold or something its name is changed and its new name is THE HILTON. Opposite to this hotel is the never ending pomerade THE MARINE DRIVE.

There are these open spots or in Mumbai terms Maidans. The names are OVAL, CROSS & AZAAD MAIDAN. These maidans were the original moats of the Fort of Mumbai. After the walls were brought down the stones used to make the walls were filled into these moats, now maidans. The Azaad Maidan has a very historic place at one end THE BOMBAY GYMKHANA.

Near to the Marine Drive there are three open spots. These are two criket stadiums. THE BREBOURN STADIUM & THE WANKHEDE STADIUM. Mumbai used to be the criketing capital Brebourn Stadium has The CCI housed there. The third open spot is the UNIVERSITY SPORTS GROUND.

The area on the lower extreme left corner is the Docks. Here there is the BALLARD PIER, INDIRA DOCKS. This area is always with alot of trucks coming in and out of the place you can call it a trading place.

The lower extreme right corner again looks like hutments but these are the four storied buildings of Gujarati people. These area has a lot of names LOHAR CHAWAL, KHETWADI, THAKURDWAR, C P TANK etc. This place has alot of shops of which sell things at wholesale rates. Oh yes there is also the famous CHOR BAZAAR here they could sell your own thing to you.
